Basically there are 3 types of lighting that can be found in your house lighting system, when they are blending well together, your house ambiance could be improved dramatically:-

- Task Lighting
- Accent Lighting
Ambient lighting also known as general lighting that provides us an overall illumination for your house. Ambient lighting should be bright enough for you to carry out your daily routine, not too dim and not too strong but at a comfortable level which we do not feel pressure and could relax under it.
Common types of Ambient Lighting:-

Select the right lighting temperature base on concept for our house. In the event that your house is in retro concept, go for warm lights. If your house is in modern and contemporary concept, go for cool temperature lights. If your house is in loft or crafts style, you might need to go for mimics incandescent lights.
Task Lighting is the focus lighting that helps you to carry out specific tasks such as food preparation, cooking, grooming, reading, studying, sewing, handcrafting, paperworks etc. It could be recessed lights, track lights, desk lamps, floor lamps, pendant lights or under-cabinet lights. Task lighting improves the illumination at our workspace, it should be create a concentrate bright, creating the contrast of light and able to prevent eye strain.

Accent Lighting is mainly refer to a decorative light, its task is to emphasize the area or highlight that we are intended to drawn people’s eyes. Its function is to make the feature wall, painting, sculptures etc outstanding from the others. In order to make achieve this purpose, accent lights normally requires at least three times brighter then the ambient lighting that surrounding it. Usually people are using recessed lights (eye ball, downlight), track lights and wall-mounted picture lights as the accent light.

Get a floor plan (ideally a furniture layout plan) for your house, for each corner, space or room, ask and answer to the below questions:-

This is to determine the light temperature that is suitable for the room.
- What is the function for this corner, space or room?
The purpose for this question is to identify the brightness that requires for the specific area, example you will need more lit for a room that is serving the purpose of reading, doing paperwork or cooking compare to the place for eating and relaxing.
- Any specific wall that you intend to treat as feature wall?
This is to determine whether you need to locate extra lighting points for your accent lighting.
- Who will be using this corner, space or room?
This is important because a 60-year-old folks is required 15 times brightness for reading compared with a 10-year-old kid.
- Where is the source of natural light? Any task light is needed?
- At which time you or or your family members will be using this room?After you have the answers to the questionnaire above, now you will be able to select, locate, and decide the number of lighting points for your ambient lights, task lights and accent lights.
